I’m reading Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali as part of my Iyengar teacher training. The sacred writings aspect of Iyengar Yoga is a mountain I have to climb. I like reading and the concepts align with my general understanding of the universe. Then again, any knowledge intentionally sought is an uphill journey.
The Sutras present a particular challenge because they are the “holy” scriptures of yoga, if there are any. And frankly, sacred text is not my favorite genre. I’m not supposed to compare yoga to religion. I do anyway. I’m sure the scholars are right but from my perspective, yoga and religions are in the same ballpark. Maybe call it spirituality? Then again, I can argue that science is a religion and yoga is medicinal.
The books make sense and I have so many things to think about when reading it’s hard to get it all out of my head. I’ll start here – sutra by sutra.
