As for the show itself…
Orgone, a band named after a theoretical universal life force, delivers just that, a rare mix of funk, disco, and soul that connects to the audience with energetic openness. The group of 8 from Los Angeles delivers a funky, 70s dance vibe and refuses to stop bringing until it has been completely brought.
The lead singer, Adryon De Leon, tempered a somewhat frat party-esque group of guys with her casual retro style and a Here-I-am-Deal-with-it vibe. When she reaches out to the crowd to ask for more, we want to give it to her. It wasn’t long before the semi-circle of 20 and 30-somethings was undulating with the rhythm of the music.
Even my husband, a fairly reluctant dancer, could feel the contagious groove. I haven’t enjoyed dancing that much since Yojimbo! played the Buccaneer back in February. Of course, I’m a sucker for a trombone. And the talented brass duo, Darren Cardoza on trombone & Devin Williams on trumpet, did not disappoint.
They brought a decidedly soulful feel to the upbeat funk that reminded everyone – this awesome is not an accident. Sometimes, even the home of the blues can use a little injection of organic brass grit. The creativity of Chuck Prada on percussion was noted by many, and his intensity inspired us all to shake it up. This is certainly a guy I’d want at my house party, even though he wore a TX forever shirt. (Wrong South, man!)
My favorite part of the whole show was probably the synergy of the band and the audience. Eye contact was made, dancing was proffered and the connection was undeniable. It is clear that this group plays together because they enjoy it, which can only lead to good times and a magnificent show. Orgone is a compelling teacher in the art of kickin’ it and, last night, I watched with amazement as a crowd of unassuming yuppies got down with the groove.
Definitely not my usual scene. I felt a bit out of place among a mix of hippie trustafarians (at least I wasn’t the tie-dyed narc), but quickly discovered that this is where I need to go when looking for upbeat, unassuming fun. The crowd was happy to be there and everyone was welcome to enjoy themselves.
Next time this group comes around, I suggest people take a work-week vacation and come join the party.
