I am glad the rain held off until after dark yesterday. Not only did it make for a great day to be out and about, but the overnight thunderstorm did NOT knock out my power (for once). So today I’m going to start what I hope to be a regular Monday installment – Weeknight Wheelin’. … *blink* … or maybe something less lame.
Aaaanyway… here are some things happening this week.
Monday (tonight) has a wide range of awesome to choose from.
My usual Monday evening is spent listening to Into the Deep on WEVL. This unique program books listeners on a charter party through ambient-land once a week. Even if it’s not your genre, this is the perfect thing to listen to while reading a book or playing video games. The subtlety of the music will soothe your subconscious, no effort needed.
If you’re looking for a little more action, check out what’s happening at the Hi-Tone. Memphis’s own Dead Soldiers are playing with Lee Bains III & The Gloryfires.
The Southeastern-based group is moving through Memphis while promoting their new album, Dereconstructed. They boast the ability to rev it up “with a riff sleazy enough to clog Rod Stewart’s stomach pump”. If that lights your fire, come out and support. Cover is $8, doors @ 8.
Do you want to do something that falls between the extremes. Come down to the P&H for a low-key open mic night. A variety of Memphis locals brave the stage for your listening pleasure. I know open mic can always be a craps-shoot for something you really love – but it’s closer and less pricey than gambling in Tunica. I can always find a good time with the fellow poor and hungry.
So what’s happening on Tuesday?
If you went to the P&H on Monday, come back for an encore. They are hosting Dinny Bulca from Milwaukee. From what I can tell, this band should provide an energetic set of garage indie rock. Am I wrong? Come to the show and prove it.
Want to slow the tempo a bit? Just down Madison, The Lamplighter Lounge hosts a weekly chess night on Tuesdays starting around 7PM. I am a self-proclaimed I-only-know-how-the-pieces-move player and I still have fun here. Don’t know how to play chess at all? Try something new. I promise it won’t hurt. There’s beer, pool, and a jukebox just in case you get bored. Remember to swing by the ATM though, this place is cash only.
There’s another choice for FREE admission in Overton Square. The concert series hosted in the Tower Courtyard brings you Bluesday Tuesday sponsored by the Memphis Blues Society. Show starts @ 6:30PM. The weather might be a little dreary, but what’s better for the blues! If you want a guaranteed seat, better pack it in the car with you.
Is it Wednesday already? Time flies when you are getting out of the house. 😉
I am usually pooped by the middle of the week. I stay home and watch a movie with close friends and go to bed early. There may or may not be a hot meal involved.
Just because I have to get some rest doesn’t mean you have to. I know Celtic Crossing has a fairly popular trivia night starting around 7:30PM. The Cove does karaoke around 10PM and who doesn’t love singing in public for strangers?
Thursday is the night of a full moon, which always injects a little crazy into things. Maybe that’s why there’s a plethora of events across Midtown this week? Just be safe and don’t blow your wad before the weekend. There will be more to do/see/try/experience.
