I went out last night with very little idea of where to go. The only thing I needed to do was drop a package at the post office. While there, I noticed a crowd of young ne’er-do-wells loitering in front of Crosstown Arts. My inner old lady immediately wanted to shake a cane and tell them to all get haircuts. After I reeled that instinct back in, I meandered across the street to investigate.
When the power went out on Monday, I pretty much abandoned my plans for productivity that night and headed up to the P&H to relax. I had a friend-date that evening and people in dive bars on Mondays are notoriously cool. In all the confusion, I completely forgot that P&H does open mic on Monday nights. Tiffany Harmon, the emcee, showed up for an early dinner and tipped me off to the event. She added that Michael Joyner was the feature artist and, like bacon, that just made it better.
That’s about as far into my post on the Fitz’s Ultimate Cookin’ Hookers (FUCH) I got when the power went out last night.
Zap.

I fully intended to go over to the Time Warp Drive-In and wish Matt a happy birthday yesterday. Then the bottom fell out. I wasn’t really excited about the muggy heat, but I was still excited to see the all the hot rods. Torrential downpour is where I have to draw the line for drive-in movies. My windshield wipers just aren’t that good.

I have discovered that video editing is a time consuming process. Especially without software. Fortunately, my Sisyphean relationship with technology yields a little more progress every round. So I just need to keep learning.
I went to The Blue Canoe in Tupelo last night to catch Yojimbo a second time. (Note: Word’p’ress spell check does not recognize Tupelo as a proper noun and yet, corrects WordPress automatically.) Driving an hour and a half to see a show is fairly uncommon for me personally. I’m not really the “We’re drivin’ to Florida!” guy in the group. This time the stars aligned perfectly. Alright… I have no business up this late. But I just couldn’t sleep until I got at least one video uploaded. This is just a small taste of what you missed at the Buccaneer last night. Stay tuned for a potential special double post spread. (Not the dirty kind.)

My adventure from last night is far too sordid to discuss here. So, I want to bring up the two best sources of movie-watching in Memphis: Black Lodge Video and the Orpheum Summer Movie Series. For completely different reasons, each of these venues represent a mandatory Memphis experience.
When I was in high school, the AFI released an official list of the 100 greatest movies of the 20th century. Qualifying their choices with “the past 100 years” seemed a bit banal considering the American movie industry didn’t get churning until the 40s, but I suppose that’s just semantics. Anyway, back then I lived out on the border of Germantown – which is what people referred to Easternmost Memphis as before Cordova and Bartlett started really growing. There’s a little Malco theater out there called the Ridgeway Four.

I completely missed this somehow. I just learned that Yojimbo! is playing the Buccaneer tomorrow evening at 10PM. This group from NOLA is a must see! Not only will I be there, but you will see me dancing.
