Let’s Go with Plan B

The Black Lodge was on fire last weekend.  Not literally, though firemen were discussed at one point.  There was a massive dance party on Saturday night.  Guerilla Stone was cooking, young folks were loitering.  I have it on good authority that some of the people inside were dancing too!  I was only able to manage a drive-by because Saturday was full of events city-wide.  I spent the previous night at Black Lodge enjoying a different show, but I’ll get to that in a minute. The funny thing about Memphis

The transition from August to September was jarring this year.  After a weekend out of town and then a weekend of unbridled debauchery celebrating my birthday, I wasn’t ready to get back to business last week.  Instead, I went in search of something new and free to do in Memphis.  The aforementioned trip left me a little broke, so my options were limited.  For inspiration on Monday I visited the best free entertainment in the city – open mic at P&H presented by Tiffany Harmon. Some Weekday Options

This is a great place to live because Memphis almost always has something going on during the weekends.  But sometimes it’s a regular weeknight and you don’t feel like dealing with the bells and whistles, right?  I’ve compiled a list of the things I like to do (or want to do) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  This list is far from complete.  I have many more corners of the city to explore in the coming months.  These are just some the pit stops I find most interesting.

August Already?

In the month of July I sort of dropped the ball on events and happenings around Memphis.  Let’s face it, the month was jam-packed full of fun things to do.  If you were waiting for me to tell you about them…  well then this blog must be way more popular than I thought.

Anyway, I had a great time enjoying myself and writing up some of the highlights. I’m going to give you some of the events for August so you can mark your calendars and plan ahead, before The Christmas in September hits.  Also at the end of this post I will announce something completely new and innovative…

Michael Joyner @ P&H Open Mic Night

When the power went out on Monday, I pretty much abandoned my plans for productivity that night and headed up to the P&H to relax.  I had a friend-date that evening and people in dive bars on Mondays are notoriously cool.  In all the confusion, I completely forgot that P&H does open mic on Monday nights.  Tiffany Harmon, the emcee, showed up for an early dinner and tipped me off to the event.  She added that Michael Joyner was the feature artist and, like bacon, that just made it better.

Pre-Owned Heart ~ Diamond Rings

Wow.  The weekend was so much fun I barely remember last week.  I also have a terrible memory, so it’s not as severe as it sounds.  This weblog turns 3 weeks old this Thursday, but it feels like it’s been months since the beginning of June.  It’s been a pretty hectic time for me – attempting to do/see/hear everything within a 10 mile radius gets challenging at times.  Fortunately, I’m not someone that backs down from a challenge.

Musical Chairs

I set out early last night with a plan.  The gods chortled as I was  derailed by caffeine (or lack thereof), low funds, and excessive anticipation.  Fun was had, but I had a slow start finding it.

Hooligans and Haircuts

I went against my nature yesterday and ventured into the land of sports.  After my experience at Celtic Crossing for the USA v England World Cup match, I vowed to watch USA games from the safety of a private dwelling in the future.  But when I saw the setup The Brass Door put together for this Cup’s opening game, I couldn’t help but check it out.  Continue reading Hooligans and Haircuts

Morning – Beck

It was a hectic weekend, to be sure.  Once all the dust settles, I think good times were had all around.  I heard that the Rosanne Cash show @ Levitt Shell pulled a record-breaking turnout.  I also received more than one invite to the new High Cotton Brewing Taproom that opened Saturday.  Apparently the Dead Soldiers capped off the festivities.  I was sorry to miss it, but I know the party must go on.
