Compartmentalization

Everyone at the bar is a similar version of someone I know. A strange philosophical anthropology where I’ve condensed everything I know about human nature to a few major archetypes, I’m not arrogant enough to think it’s measurable. I ascribe to empathy and the idea that sensitivity extends beyond the frayed nerves you see on my exterior. Feeling someone’s aura is only called intuition when it’s useful. The gut feeling that a person is bad for you doesn’t count if you still sleep with them. That’s called setting a trap and then falling into it. Recognizing bad seeds is a talent. Don’t get it twisted. Continue reading Compartmentalization

Memphis Most Time Wasted

The Best of Memphis poll needs one more category.  Best Pandering Asshole.

Popularity contests are not in themselves wrong.  Majority opinion has worth and it’s very flattering when you win.  And of course, the pathetic losers keep each other company in their mediocrity.  The premise is that the “best” of something gets recognition by consistently providing quality service and/or entertainment to the masses.  Lobbying and begging for votes cheapens the concept.  Though adding Groveling to the Miss American contest has great entertainment potential.

If only money wasn’t involved.  The annual Best of Memphis thing sparks a deluge of people and places reminding everyone who will listen that they want your vote.  Some even give reasons why they deserve it.  It’s nothing more than high school student council elections sans glitter and poster-boards.  With less meaning.

I’m pretty damn opinionated yet I have trouble finding answers for the wealth of categories in this poll.  Best BBQ in Memphis? You aren’t really a Memphian without thoughts on that.  (Vegetarians note, DeJaVu has excellent BBQ tofu.)  But Best Pizza?  Uhm – it’s a tie between New York and Chicago for me.  Best Florist?  Might as well call it least shitty florist in Memphis because people who care about flowers most likely go to the spring plant sales and grow their own.

It’s also annoying that you have to fill out at least 50% of the 135 categories.  I guess your opinion only counts if you are a really picky eater or a music snob?  It’s a shame the government doesn’t apply the same rule to elections.  Your vote only counts if you invest in 50% or more of the issues at hand.

Le Fil (The Thread) ~ Camille

Wow.  Memphis was rocking and everyone came knocking this weekend.  Saturday, I hit five parties and only 3 of them were intentional.  You couldn’t swing a black cat without hitting a good time last night.  The effects were felt as far away as Spain.  Unfortunately, I left my camera at home.  It wasn’t entirely intentional but I’ll admit I took it as an omen to go off script.  Continue reading Le Fil (The Thread) ~ Camille

Some Weekday Options

This is a great place to live because Memphis almost always has something going on during the weekends.  But sometimes it’s a regular weeknight and you don’t feel like dealing with the bells and whistles, right?  I’ve compiled a list of the things I like to do (or want to do) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  This list is far from complete.  I have many more corners of the city to explore in the coming months.  These are just some the pit stops I find most interesting.

Blues on the Bluff 2014

I’m not sure where the Memphis heat went this past week.  Honestly, I don’t really care that much because Blues on the Bluff at the Ornamental Metal Museum was frickin’ gorgeous last night.  Despite the fourth plague of mosquitoes, everyone enjoyed the annual benefit for WEVL 89.9 FM and the slightly muggy mid-seventies temp was a delightful reprieve to our typical July heat.  At dusk, the clouds on the horizon dissipated just enough to reveal a breathtaking sunset over the river.  It was an iconic Memphis evening for sure. The Hard Road ~ Smog

After last weekend’s wildness, it’s understandable if you want to take it easy for the next few days.  However, July 4th is around the corner and there will be plenty of private parties for kicking back.  June has been a hot month for happenings and I don’t plan to quit now.  Not everything has to be turned up to 11, so if you’re tired take a look and choose one of the less intense activities for this weekend.

Morning – Beck

It was a hectic weekend, to be sure.  Once all the dust settles, I think good times were had all around.  I heard that the Rosanne Cash show @ Levitt Shell pulled a record-breaking turnout.  I also received more than one invite to the new High Cotton Brewing Taproom that opened Saturday.  Apparently the Dead Soldiers capped off the festivities.  I was sorry to miss it, but I know the party must go on.
