Firmly establishing what my identity isn’t linked to, I’m faced with the bigger question of what is? An advantage to peeling away these layers of repression is high contrast. Each raw, painful memory stripped and exposed leaves a virtual road map to the sources of my insecurity. I only lament not getting more tattoos. Continue reading Not My Hair

Southern Music
North Mississippi All Stars is playing the Croc tomorrow night and I feel conflicted. A group that literally played events for my high school peers while I actively avoided them but I still kinda want to go. Much like the rest of Southern music in the 90s, it wasn’t the quality of artist but their fans that detracted from my experience. If I go see a show in Seattle in 2017 what sort of peers will I have? There’s so much good music I left behind in Memphis. I’m haunted with a need for soul that might make me pay $20 for nostalgia purposes alone. Perfect time to be Memphis as Fuck. Continue reading Southern Music
The Serfsons
The most recent Simpsons episode is pretty great. I could really feel the Fuck You’s in the writing. Clearly still written by men, there’s a short speech about a girl becoming a woman who wants to be a mother and I totally understand the contextual nature of the situation but a run-on sentence is the only way to express my dissatisfaction at the misplaced sentiment. Life is about change and not everything is for everyone. I don’t expect to be right about everything yet I’m completely sure of myself. The past few years were about learning to fall gracefully. Getting back up? That happens at your own pace. Continue reading The Serfsons
Eclipses
Everyone’s excited about the mostly full solar eclipse tomorrow morning. I might wake up early enough to see it. I watched one in grade school that I remember vividly so I’m not so eager as some. Astral phenomena are like world records, you only really care about the ones you can clearly witness. The astrological implications of eclipses are more interesting to me. No matter how little someone believes the premise, eclipses clearly affect human behavior. Mercury’s also in retrograde, tigers and bears oh my. Continue reading Eclipses
Sharknado 5
The moral of the story is all people are terrible. Five movies about radioactive sharks trying to conquer the world and the rag-tag misfits working together to stop them? At least it’s not another remake. We’re at a point in the movie where Geraldo Rivera just picked up the heroes in an airship like mother-fucking Cid from Final Fantasy. It was a short-lived venture, probably a budgetary decision. Continue reading Sharknado 5
Cheese
I have no less than 6 drafts I’ve started within the last 2 weeks. My mind got ahead of my schedule for a while. I tend to lay ’em in clutches. It’s the best way to get one or two turtles back in the ocean. Tonight I escape my writer’s block playing with a camera and interesting lighting. There’s also music at my work and that’s worth taking pictures of for at least a moment. Continue reading Cheese
Bargaining
The hardest stage to reconcile because it hinges on outside influences. Depression and anger are at least stages you can drink through. Getting drunk while bargaining leads to 3am texts and Facebook stalking. The best way to handle this part of grief is vivisection. Intercept urges to beg and break them down. Look at the problem until you discover why you feel that need. It’s never because of the thing you’ve lost. Bothering other people with fruitless hopes is just selfish drama. Ezra Furman
I’m exploiting my wedge in a crack. Looking for potential in places no one checks, it’s my way of surveying humanity. People trying something new for the first time are the best forum for growth. Development happens in discomfort and the people we meet are our main source of disruption. Getting comfortable in a routine leads to ruts in behavior. Staying out of ruts is how we move forward. I’m going to a show in Ballard next week just to see the opener, if he is there. The publicist website lists the show but the venue only lists the headliner. Granted, the Tractor always puts on good shows; I’ll have fun no matter what happens. Continue reading Ezra Furman
Belgrado
Punk band from Spain. I think I heard it on KEXP but could have easily been WEVL. That’s my entire point with the disparity. WEVL is a volunteer radio station that’s existed in Memphis for over 41 years with absolutely no endorsement or subsidization. People dedicated to music and its history sharing with the public. Having them streaming on the internet is momentous. We could create a library off their content that would bring music lovers to their knees. If only there was funding for that sort of thing in the midSouth. Seattle is so spoiled.
