Either my first time at a venue or my first time seeing a show. First impressions can be important.

Hard as Hell

On the advice of my mentor, I indulged in a new television show – Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.

By indulge, I do mean binge watch.

Lafayette’s Curb Appeal

When James & the Ultrasounds kicked off their spring tour at Lafayette’s Music Room last month it was my chance to see the venue for the first time.  As they say – if I haven’t seen it, it’s new to me.  I’ve only heard  stories of the location’s historic status, mostly from their website.  It was there I discovered the two historic locations coming to Palm Beach & Orlando. So maybe they mean esoterically historic – like an if-you-build-it-they-will-come thing?  The rapid expansion all along Madison Avenue provides an endless supply of places to try only once.  Staking their claim for well over a year, Lafayette’s has created a unique space with cool ambiance.  And the Square deserves that excellent outdoor balcony. Drunk Drawers

When I first heard Drink N’ Draw I thought, “What a spectacular idea! Why didn’t someone think of this sooner!”  Short answer – they did.  Combining visual art and alcohol is a whole “thing” that has endless variations.  And why not?  Everyone derived entertainment from pencils and paper as a kid.  So let’s drink ourselves back to 3rd grade and do some colorin’.  Brilliant!  Continue reading Drunk Drawers

An Unspecified Number of Things To Do In March

Hail to all the ice storm survivors.  As a city, we get the Oscar for most-improved performance in the event of frozen water.  Compared to ’94, I’m proud of Memphis and our little-salt-truck-that-could.   And after that freeze, everything from here on out is practically spring.  In that spirit, it’s time to knock the dust off and get out into the brisk air.  A good time to scout for new hangouts, there’s no reason to break the budget before spring official kicks off. Here are my favorite places to find free-ish things happening in Memphis.  Continue reading An Unspecified Number of Things To Do In March

Getting Started @ the CHC

By now, everyone in Memphis should know about the Church Health Center.  Their Clinic is “the largest faith-based healthcare organization of its type in the country“.  If my translation is correct, that’s code for “we don’t compete with major hospitals.”  With extensive support from the local community, the CHC offers a healthcare plan that considers the big picture when it comes to quality care.  Because of this, their model is one of the most progressive healthcare innovations in damn near a century.  At least, in massively overpopulated first-world nations.  Continue reading Getting Started @ the CHC

The Bronze Age Is Upon Us

In case you haven’t heard, Marcella & Her Lovers are in the midst of an IndieGoGo campaign.  Thanks to overwhelming support from fans in the Memphis community they have raised 75% of the $5000 needed to release their debut EP The Bronze Age.  Response from fans has been overwhelming and with 15 days left in the crowd-funding push I feel confident they will reach the goal. Marcella emailed me a sneak peek of the music last week and I can assure you this release is well worth your support. Continue reading The Bronze Age Is Upon Us

Let’s Go with Plan B

The Black Lodge was on fire last weekend.  Not literally, though firemen were discussed at one point.  There was a massive dance party on Saturday night.  Guerilla Stone was cooking, young folks were loitering.  I have it on good authority that some of the people inside were dancing too!  I was only able to manage a drive-by because Saturday was full of events city-wide.  I spent the previous night at Black Lodge enjoying a different show, but I’ll get to that in a minute. Let’s Do the Time Warp Again

Last weekend was so busy I’m just now recovering from the fallout. Gonerfest had everyone amped up and looking for a good time.  You didn’t even have to brave the Crosstown crowds to take advantage of the excitement.  The entire city hummed with energy and there were things happening everywhere.  Staying true to form, I avoided heavily populated areas and enjoyed some quality time doing something new.  Nothing personal Hi Tone, I just find the No Re-Entry policy a bit unsettling.  Feels a little too Gulagish to me.  Continue reading Let’s Do the Time Warp Again
