In the month of July I sort of dropped the ball on events and happenings around Memphis. Let’s face it, the month was jam-packed full of fun things to do. If you were waiting for me to tell you about them… well then this blog must be way more popular than I thought.
Anyway, I had a great time enjoying myself and writing up some of the highlights. I’m going to give you some of the events for August so you can mark your calendars and plan ahead, before The Christmas in September hits. Also at the end of this post I will announce something completely new and innovative…
The first thing is tonight – It’s Summerween! at Black Lodge Video. I already plugged this in the last post, but now I’m telling you – put on something crazy and get over there. “Costume” has a very wide definition. Why wouldn’t you want to go? I will be there by the time you’re reading this.
As for the rest of the month.
Tomorrow, August 2nd 2000: Sinister Goth Night @ Minglewood
If you’ve been before, it’s time to go back again. If you haven’t tried out goth night in the 1884 lounge, then it’ll be the perfect weekend to try it. It’s only $5. Why not?
Sunday, August 3rd 1700-2000: F.U.C.H. with Jimmy Davis @ The Buccaneer
In case you forgot, go read about the glory that is Fitz’s Ultimate Cookin’ Hookers. I’ll admit that this experience might not float everyone’s boat. But if you are looking for a laid-back Sunday evening with classic music, great food and friendly company – the Bucc is where you’ll find it.
Wednesday, August 6th 1930-2100: Music with Eric Sommer @ Java Cabana
I have no idea what kind of music this is – but it’s a great option for a Wednesday. I’ve seen the promo for this multiple times, which is usually the universe’s way of saying I should attend the show. And the best part about Java’s shows is when they’re done you still have time for a second event. No wonder they serve coffee.
Friday August 8th 2130-2345: Back To School Costume Party @ Hi Tone
Exactly what it sounds like. So if you missed the party last Friday at Black Lodge or your are about to go back to school – well… here ya go. It’s $7 at the door and you’ll get to experience reggae from The Chinese Connection Dub Embassy as well as performances by Greedy Kidney, Sin City Scoundrels, and Medicin Men. Also featuring the brand new Adventure Time tribute band The Band of Ooo. Greedy Kidney alone is worth the cover. =)
Sunday August 9th 1800: Memphis Roller Derby Championship @ The-Place-Formerly-Known-As-Liberty-Land
I have to admit – I’ve never been to a roller derby match. *ducks* I know, I know! I should be ashamed and so I am. I will attend this event because I’ve just plain run out of excuses. Who wants to come with me? It’s only $12 to see the championship! I’ll have a favorite team by the end of the match.
Thursday, August 14th 1900-2300: Motel Mirrors and Marcella Simien @ Thursdays Squared
Overton Square is still putting together quality music for you to enjoy. I’ve been watching the names go by all summer and seem to miss every show for some reason or another. This duo shall not be ignored. Louisiana sweetheart Marcella Simien will open for Motel Mirrors, a collaboration between locals Amy LaVere and John Paul Keith. $10 to get in and your first drink is free. There’s also the VIP option for $25.
Friday August 15th 2000-2200: Spillit Story Slam: Competition @ Amurica Studio
I think I’ve pretty much covered how much I love Spillit. I’m still trying to narrow down what I want to spill. With a theme like competition, I have a wealth of emotionally raw memories to sort through. Chances are, I’ll expose myself at this event. *deep breath*
Sunday, August 17th 1530: Pezz @ The Buccaneer
Note the start time on this event. So just remember when you’re a little tipsy from that hangover brunch… this is the perfect thing to wake you from your nap. Set the alarm and sleep off the rest of Saturday. Then come to the best pirate bar in Memphis for some daytime drinkin’. You’ll thank yourself Monday.
Tuesday, August 19th At Night: The Outhouse @ The P&H Cafe
It’s your favorite dive bar, complete with touring band from Lancaster, PA. It’s a great night to try something different. And the show is free. Can’t beat that. Expect high energy and cool people.
Saturday, August 23rd 2100-2345: Dead Soldiers EP Release Party @ Hi Tone
There’s no excuses to miss this. It’s a fabulous band at a great venue and everyone who’s anyone will be there. Honestly, if you haven’t given Dead Soldiers a chance yet, this party is the perfect place to make up for it. “High Anxiety” is a stellar title track.
Saturday August 30th 1100 (that’s right – a.m.): Michael Joyner @ The Downtown Farmer’s Market
This is an event I want to point out even though I’ll be in another state that weekend. I’ve enjoyed the times I got to see Michael Joyner play and the Farmer’s Market is a great place to enjoy his music. Someone go buy me something handmade and take some video while you’re there!
I’ll review this post again tomorrow and give you a sequel that notes weekly events worth your time. It’ll help fill the gaps between the weekends. But now I’m late for the party!
Oh yeah… so my announcement. I’m organizing a kickstarter for How To Leave Home. This blog is my baby and it’s time to help it grow. I know I can bring you more and better. I just need to get some better equipment first. So check out the rewards and consider pledging some money. I give really great hugs.
