Smoking Pot

I had a job interview today.  It went like all the other job interviews I’ve ever had.  Smile, make a good impression, get offered the job. Difference this time is I didn’t use a stage whisper when I asked about the drug test.  After all, weed is legal here so I don’t have to lie about using it.  I was very clear when asking if that was going to be a problem.  I don’t consider it a problem no matter their response.

Unfortunately, QFC is headquartered in the Midwest.  So corporate still has a problem with marijuana.  Good thing I asked.  I was able to just decline the job offer and leave the stage open for a second show next week when I’m “clean”.  If I’d taken the test and failed it was a mandatory 6 month wait before reapplying.  Not that working at a grocery store is my end goal here.  It’s just something I can do that I won’t stress about.  All I need is a trickle of income and my sanity can remain intact.

As I expected, legalizing pot isn’t that simple.  Admitting I use it doesn’t carry the same amount of shame it did in the 90s but there’s still plenty of condescension.  By all accounts I’m a hard-working professional person that shows up on time for all of my jobs.  Smoking pot as a vice doesn’t make that less true but the Kroger Family Company just doesn’t see it that way.  Doesn’t matter than a chronic alcohol drinker makes a less appealing candidate – they can pass a drug test.  Stupid Americans.
