The further into the game I get the happier I am.
The battle sequences are turn based but non-sequential. There can be up to 3 foes but only two heroes at one time. A bar at the bottom of the screen shows everyone moving at different turn speeds. The end of the bar is a cast area marked in red. If attacked during casting, which can range from instant to very long, the player can be interrupted. On top of that, I have a little blue light I can shine on enemies to slow them down. Timing is everything. It’s very engaging.
This game mechanic is in addition to all the usual attacks, spells, and potions any fantasy game comes with. There’s also a cute elemental system that keeps surprising me. Players are equipped with Oculi – based on precious stones you craft to refine or combine. I discovered a diamond today. The stones also seem to have different effects depending on a player’s strengths and abilities.
The skill level system has yet to reveal all its secrets to me but the creative permutations of the game so far are plenty enough to keep me playing to the end.
