Social Gadflies

All relationships end, even the good ones.  I remember when South Park aired.  Groundbreaking, in some ways.  Certainly unique.  An avid fan of animation in general, I was on the young side of their target demo.  Back then, the tone felt like a sharp slant on The Simpsons with the in-your-face MTV ‘tude.  Of course this all happened before I was aware of the media.  I do remember needing to go out of my way to watch it because my parents thought it was “gross”.

Less easily offended, my initial impression was all aces.  Over the years my appreciation for South Park has waxed and waned.  I don’t go out of my way to watch it and I don’t turn it off when it’s on.  Their irreverence has consistently toed the line of what’s acceptable in media.  All of it’s funny, so when I don’t laugh it makes me examine why.  For a while, I learned about my own prejudices and assumptions.  But I’m deep like that.

The last episode seems to sum it up effectively.  Everything ends eventually.  As a genre, Animation tends to have an extensive shelf life.  I’m curious to see how long South Park lasts as a concept.
